Morrisons Foundation supports children at Dawn House School, Nottinghamshire with £15,000

Dawn House School, run by I CAN, the children and young people’s communication charity, has been awarded a grant for its ‘Children find their voice with music’ project.

The grant from Morrisons Foundation will enable children with complex Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) at Dawn House School in Rainworth, near Mansfield, to ‘find their voice’ through music, offering another route to express themselves and connect with the world around them.

I CAN’s Dawn House School is a special school for children and young people aged 5 – 19. Each pupil at Dawn House is encouraged to learn effectively by focusing on the development of good communications skills. They achieve this through the integration of education, therapy, and care to ensure that pupils and students feel valued and motivated.

Providing students from Dawn House with equipment to perform, produce and record music will facilitate communication, develop and acquire skills, increase confidence, foster a sense of achievement, enable exploration of vocational opportunities and help students gain qualifications in the creative industries, easing transition into adulthood once they graduate from Dawn House School.

Andy Metcalfe, Media Studies Tutor at I CAN's Dawn House School says:

'We can't thank Morrisons Foundation enough for their generosity! This will make a massive difference to the students across all the age ranges, and give them the opportunity to get their creative voice heard using state of the art equipment'

Adrian Horsley, Morrisons Foundation Advisor says:

"I'm delighted that we have been able to award this donation to I CAN.  It makes me very proud knowing that our funding will enable the charity to provide music therapy and workshops for children with complex needs at Dawn House Special School.  The vital support offered by the charity to children and families who rely on their services makes a huge difference"
