Evidence shows that good spoken language skills are essential for later academic success, relationship building and employment. Schools and settings should therefore ensure they support and promote spoken language skills for all pupils, with additional support put in place for those who struggle.
Knowledgeable staff with understanding of how to support children’s spoken language skills are essential to ensure best impact. The Speech, Language and Communication Framework (SLCF) is a free online audit which you can do with staff. This sets out the key skills and knowledge needed by the children and young people's workforce to support the spoken language development of all pupils.
