The Communication Consortium Grants Programme supports the projects and operations of Communication Consortium members through direct financial grants. This is a three-year programme, funded by the Rayners Special Educational Trust. In 2020, nine Consortium members were supported through a total of £312,000 in grants. Applications are now open for the second year of the grants programme.
To be eligible to apply for a Communication Consortium grant, your organisation must have been a registered member of the Communication Consortium for a minimum of 12 months before the 1st of April each calendar year. For the 2021 grants programme, your organisation will need to have been a registered member of the Communication Consortium since at least March 2020.
All grant applications must ensure that the work being funded will support the following objective:
To advance the education and relief of people (in particular, children and young adults) who suffer communication difficulties associated with hearing impairment, language impairment and autism.
Expression of Interest: 3rd May 2021 – 28th May 2021
Prospective applicants should complete the application template (below) and email to RWhitelaw@ican.org.uk before the deadline. Successful applicants at this stage will then be invited to complete a full application.
Full Application: 30th June 2021 – 23rd July 2021
Applicants will be contacted directly with a full application template. All applicants will be informed of the grant panel decision no later than 23rd August 2021. Funds will be distributed in September 2021.
Better Communication
Developing an accessible and scalable methodology which allows a range of users to contribute to outcome and impact measurement through a user-friendly digital interface. Initially focused on SLT services, schools and settings engaged with the Balanced System® and families that they serve, with an ambition to be a resource which is linked with wider systems.
The Elizabeth Foundation
Providing an online national outreach programme for parents concerned about their deaf baby / child, to include free access to targeted learning materials & practical support via digital channels.
Puzzle Centre and PACE
Developing ‘sensory stories’ for children with Autism and Complex Needs. Through the creation of appropriate stories, training and accessible resources, parents / carers and staff in both settings will have the confidence and ability to deliver sensory stories relating to daily life skills for the children.
Afasic
Delivering a parents’ support helpline, continuing their specialist primary-to-secondary transition courses, and developing more remote ways of supporting parents & families across the country.
Artburst
Building a library of high-quality online creative and communication focussed resources for children with SLCN. Creating a No Pens Day resource for piloting in schools, running several online children’s festivals, delivering face-to-face Singing Signing Stories in an open space in Hackney, and hosting a creative showcase to profile children’s achievements during the project.
Commtap
Developing a free resource bank of 200 focused strategies and 200 activities for parents with school-aged children with speech, language, and communication needs.
The London Bubble Theatre Company
Delivering Speech Bubbles – a creative small group intervention which supports and encourages children to be effective communicators through drama and theatre – in 10 South London schools.
NAPLIC
Implementing four strands which work together to build awareness, skills, and knowledge to support children and young people with developmental language disorder (DLD). Running six online learning modules for professionals; providing clear print and animated information for families; developing and hosting a list of a list of specialist language unit provisions across the UK; and commissioning new YouTube films to raise awareness of DLD.
