Meet the Apprentices: Helping young professionals grow at Speech and Language UK

April 3, 2025

At Speech and Language UK, we believe every child deserves the chance to face the future with confidence. But behind the scenes, we’re also helping young professionals grow and thrive through our apprenticeship programme. Meet four of our incredible apprentices, each bringing their own passion and purpose to the organisation.

💼 Herbert – Finance Apprentice

What inspired you to choose this apprenticeship?

I chose this apprenticeship because it was the perfect opportunity to get into my chosen career; a balance between work experience and education.

Which part of Speech and Language UK’s mission do you connect with most?

I value the education and training they give to people that would have had very limited options in a traditional school setting.

How do you like to celebrate a small win at work?

I usually play some nice music.

What would you like to have achieved by the time you complete your apprenticeship?

I want to fulfil all of the responsibilities that were planned at the start of my apprenticeship.

🎨 Amber – Graphic Design Apprentice

What inspired you to choose this apprenticeship?

I have a big passion for graphic design and knew that I wanted it as my career path, so when I was looking for new jobs, I knew this was a perfect opportunity.

Which part of Speech and Language UK’s mission do you connect with most?

I connect with ‘We give children and young people the skills they need so they aren’t left behind, waiting to be understood’ the most. I truly believe that everyone deserves an equal education and chance to learn and develop.

How do you like to celebrate a small win at work?

I will normally call my mum and tell her what I’ve been doing, and we will celebrate together over the phone.

What would you like to have achieved by the time you complete your apprenticeship?

I would love to confidently support the Fundraising, Marketing and Communications team in campaigns and projects, applying all the skills I’ve learnt.

🎯 Ryan – Fundraising Apprentice

What inspired you to choose this apprenticeship?

I chose this apprenticeship because I’m passionate about helping others, and Speech and Language UK’s mission aligns with my values. The chance to contribute to a cause that supports children’s development while gaining valuable experience in fundraising made it the perfect fit.

Which part of Speech and Language UK’s mission do you connect with most?

I connect most with helping children overcome speech and language barriers. I believe communication is key to success, and I’m proud to be part of an organisation that empowers children to express themselves.

How do you like to celebrate a small win at work?

I like to celebrate small wins by going for a walk or treating myself to something sweet. It’s a great way to recharge and stay motivated.

What would you like to have achieved by the time you complete your apprenticeship?

By the end of my apprenticeship, I hope to have developed strong fundraising skills and built good relationships with donors, making a real impact through my work.

💻 Deanna – Digital Assistant Apprentice

What inspired you to choose this apprenticeship?

The job description and the charity’s mission really aligned with me. I enjoy creative digital work and saw this as a great way to make a difference and kickstart my digital marketing career.

Which part of Speech and Language UK’s mission do you connect with most?

I connect with helping children who face speech and language challenges. There’s not enough awareness, and I want to support by helping make useful content for parents, teachers, and supporters, because children have rights too. Every child deserves the opportunity to be understood, supported, and given the tools to thrive. I really believe in the organisation’s commitment to early intervention, inclusivity, and making sure no child is left behind.

How do you like to celebrate a small win at work?

I usually tell my mum and sister – it makes me feel proud. I also take a moment to say to myself, ‘I did that’ –  simple but powerful.

What would you like to have achieved by the time you complete your apprenticeship?

I want to gain full skills in content creation; digital marketing, like emails, SEO, paid ads, and managing the website; edit videos with CapCut, and to have worked on full marketing campaigns from start to finish.

Each of these apprentices is helping us change young lives from behind the scenes, through spreadsheets, campaigns, donor connections, and digital content. Their stories are a reminder that learning, growing, and making an impact go hand in hand.
