Speech and Language UK is the operating name of I CAN Charity.
We recognise that your privacy is important and we take our responsibility for safeguarding your personal data very seriously. We are also committed to being transparent about how we collect and use your data and to meeting our data protection obligations. As an organisation which provides licensed tutor services to access our range of products and services addressing children’s communications needs, I CAN needs to keep and process information about you for monitoring purposes. This Privacy Notice sets out the basis by which we collect, use and disclose that personal data, as well as your rights in respect of such personal information.
Under data protection laws, I CAN is defined as a data controller[1]. In this Privacy Notice, references to “I CAN”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the I CAN charity, including our schools. References to “Data Protection Laws” in this policy are to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679), the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive 2002/58/EC as implemented in the UK, and any amending or replacement legislation.
We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time and will publish an up-to-date copy of the Privacy Notice on our website.
What personal information is collected and what it is used for
Data such as contact details, employment details, licensee history and details including payment information, CVs, reasons for membership of professional institutions, qualifications, continuous professional development (CPD) details, products purchases, clients, queries and complaints will be held by I CAN and used for the following reasons:
- to administer and manage your license to use I CAN products and services;
- to maintain details of any accreditations;
- to monitor performance;
- to enhance and improve I CAN’s products and services;
- to fulfil our business and regulatory functions; and
- to communicate with you.
Some of this information is provided by you when you make enquiries with us or with your application for membership or renewal of membership. Other information will be obtained during the course of your membership from you or third parties, such as employers, customers or members of the public, to enable us to carry out the purposes set out above.
If you telephone our Business Development department, we may monitor or record the call for training purposes or to assist us in carrying out the purposes listed above.
Sensitive Information
Some of the information we ask you for or which you provide may be sensitive personal data, such as information about medical conditions, criminal convictions or bankruptcy. We will not use such sensitive personal data except for the purposes of processing your membership, including issuing newsletters, supplying details to potential client organisations and, in the case of information about medical conditions, for the purpose of making any reasonable adjustments where possible.
Disclosure of information to third parties
We will never sell your personal data to third parties and we do not disclose your information to any third parties or bodies with which we are not associated unless we have your permission to do so or are required to do so by law.
Your rights
Under data protection laws, you have a right to request a copy of some or all of the personal information I CAN holds about you. You also have a right to correct inaccurate data, and, in some circumstances, may have a right to request erasure of data, data transfer (or “data portability”), and to object to or restrict processing.
